A Solo Instrumental

Creating Your Own Music

A solo instrumental is one of those particularly interesting and challenging experiences in the life of any piano player. Imagine all eyes are turned on to you.

People are depending on the quality of music that you're about to provide. People will evaluate the music as a way of understanding your skill, experience and just how creative you are. While each person is unique in what they create, it's important to learn that you can create your own instrumental music.

Before you can decide whether creating your own music is right for you, consider your goals. For some people, such as Donna Linton, the goal isn't to write music that's heard but not listened to. There is that difference in music.

Many times, you'll see a movie but not really pay attention to the music playing in the background. In other situations, you may experience that background music, but not really take in the melodies. With a solo performance, you're taking on this challenging experience in the hopes of building your own skill.

Donna Linton Donna Linton has taken on that challenge. Donna's new album, entitled The Driftwood Trip, explores the unique music that only she can create. There are 14 pieces on her CD and each one is unique in what it offers. These are stand alone pieces, not pieces meant to be background music.

Making a Solo Instrument Work

As you consider your own skills and desires in the world of instrumental music, there are a few things to ask yourself.

You need to know what it takes to really break into the world of successful music that's more than background music.

  • Select music that is inspiring to you. When you are inspired, others will be as well.
  • When it comes to piano music, solo pieces should create a story in the mind of the listener. You need to help that story to come alive.
  • Choose to create dynamic pieces that explore the depths of your skill. Avoid pieces that aren't challenging.
  • Challenge yourself. Push yourself in new directions.
